Avenal High School

At Avenal High School we have successfully finished our first semester of block scheduling.  Comparing last year’s fall 2013 semester without block schedule to this past semester Fall 2014 with a block schedule, we had an increase in student achievement with a higher number of students passing their courses. This means that overall Avenal High School Students’ grade point averages were higher this fall thanks to the hard work of our students, the dedication of our staff, and the support of our parents and community.  The support of our parents has been evident through the two parent conference nights that we have had at our campus.  Over a thousand parent contacts have been made in these two nights. Also Avenal High School parents have been utilizing Aeries portal to monitor their student’s work, and we are proud that our parents are asking questions and continue to be involved in their students’ academic careers.
In addition through our continued partnership with West Hills College we offered four West Hills classes on our campus this past semester.  These college level classes had ninety percent of the students passing them.  Along with this we have also had our first cohort of freshmen begin the Paramount Agricultural Career Academy. With Avenal High School, Paramount Farms, and West Hills these students are attending college courses along with their high school courses, so that they will be able to graduate with their High School diploma, and a significant number of college units.  These college units will be transferable to University of California schools along with California State Colleges. A learning garden has also been added on our campus for students to learn from, and to provide delicious produce.  We recently harvested bok choy, swiss chard, leafy greens, herbs, and a variety of lettuce.
Not only have we had academic success, Avenal High School has also been undergoing improvement to our facilities.  Our main hallways are in the process of being repainted, and the brown has been replaced with a Buccaneer Blue. The color change has brightened up, and brought a different feel to our campus. We are excited to continue improving our facilities.
Although we still have a long road ahead of us to get where we want to be, with the continued work done by staff, students, parents and the community we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.  As the principal of Avenal High School I appreciate input and community support.  I am always available, so please don’t hesitate to contact us with any suggestions that might make our High School better. Go Bucs!
